The DIIAR was established in 1990. The former Institutes of Hydraulics, Environmental Engineering and Surveying, Photogrammetry & Geophysics constituted the initial core of the Department while a group of the former DSTM (road & transportation dept.) joined the DIIAR in 2002.
Since its inception, the Department has been structured as an ensemble of Sections within a common administrative matrix, provided by the Department Administration Unit. The Sections are:
The Department continues to be located within the buildings of the original Institutes, this leading to a dispersion of the Sections over the Campus Leonardo (ed. 3, 4, 9, 10) and Campus Bassini (ed. 34), but the situation will change in the next future. A building rehabilitation program, currently prepared by the Building Services of the Politecnico, will allow to site all the sections and labs of the department within two neighboring buildings.
The DIIAR is an interdisciplinary basic and applied science department. It is strongly involved in several and diverse areas of research, all of which share a common environment-oriented matrix.
DIIAR’s activity is therefore aimed at developing the knowledge of Environment in all its aspects from its representation to the protection from natural and anthropic-induced risks and to the restoration of the environmental quality and the improvement of infrastructures.
DIIAR has a strong research activity, both on a local or international basis, and is active also on the side of the research and consulting activities financed by private or public companies and territorial agencies.
Its Laboratories, hereafter listed, can also provide analytical services whose results are officially recognized.
